  • Title: Metal Doping and Co doping Effect on the Ethanol Sensing Efficacy of ZnO Film

Abstract

Ethanol is one of the most widely produced toxic chemical in the world. Excessive ethanol exposure and usage pose health risk. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor it in real time. The most common substance for gas detection is zinc oxide. The majority of reported ZnO based sensors operate at temperatures  greater than 300 degrees C. As the high temperature operation reduces the stability, attempts are going on to lower the operating temperature and to improve the sensitivity of ZnO based sensors using techniques like metal doping, surface modification, nano compositing, etc. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of undoped, metal doped and co doped ZnO films for the ethanol detection. The metal and codoping inti ZnO led the modification in the crystallite size, band gap, and grain sizes of ZnO. The metal doping and metals co-doping enhanced the ethanol sensing capacity of ZnO.  Overall, this research contributes to advancing the gas sensor technology by providing insight into developing a low cost metal based gas sensor.
